A vessel appears on coastal radar with no AIS transmission. Nothing below is measured. It is a walk-through of how the same night unfolds with and without a fused operating picture.
Without a fused picture
Radar paints a contact
A return appears about eleven miles out. It exists on one screen and on no others.
AIS says nothing
The vessel is not transmitting. Nothing on the console distinguishes a transponder fault from a fishing boat from intent.
The camera hunts
A bearing is read aloud and an EO/IR head is slewed by hand, searching an empty horizon in the dark.
The window closes
By the time anything is on screen the contact has moved. The watch log records an unknown.
